PLACES TO VISIT

MID-SUFFOLK LIGHT RAILWAY, STOWMARKET

The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway is Suffolk’s only standard gauge heritage railway, offering steam open days and events to the general public. Services are normally steam operated on both standard open days and special event days (see website for event information). The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway was affectionately known as the ‘Middy’.

At their main site at Brockford they have attempted to recreate the atmosphere the old railway, which was always strapped for cash and, having closed in 1952 (long before Beeching), there was very little remaining except a few buildings. So whilst not original, rolling stock is of the period of an Edwardian rural railway.

Trains are steam haled. Open most Sundays and Bank Holidays until 31st August and then open again for Santa Specials in December.

Today’s ‘Middy’ is not only a museum, but runs regular steam trains and has a programme of carriage and wagon restoration complementing its efforts to recreate this slice of Edwardian England. Two major projects in hand and rapidly reaching fruition.

2025 event – August 2nd & 3rd; is the opening of an extension which will more than double the length of the ride to approx. 1 kilometre.
